Pre-alert for coastal phenomena: Canary Islands and Morocco on alert for storm Olivier

A coastal phenomenon alert has been issued in the Canary Islands and nearby Moroccan coastal areas, based on warnings from the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands. The affected areas include the western islands such as La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and northern Tenerife, as well as the coasts of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. This measure will take effect on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 a.m., in anticipation of the arrival of storm Olivier, as predicted by the State Meteorological Agency. The latest updates indicate expected waves between 2.5 and 4 meters high, accompanied by south and west winds blowing between 20 and 38 kilometers per hour. The most exposed areas include the north-east, north, and west coasts of La Palma, all coasts of El Hierro except the southeast part, the west and southwest area of La Gomera, northern Tenerife, the west coasts of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, and the adjacent Moroccan coastal areas. Authorities have issued recommendations to the population, including exercising extreme caution in coastal areas, avoiding access to docks, piers, and beaches with strong waves, and refraining from nautical or sports activities in the affected areas. Caution is also advised when driving on roads near the coast, which could be affected by spray or landslides. The Canary Islands government has assured that it will continue to activate surveillance protocols and will update information regularly as weather conditions evolve in the coming hours.
